Battery Energy Storage Systems are essential infrastructure for responding to the climate emergency, ensuring the UK’s energy security and meeting net-zero carbon goals. These systems store electricity created by solar and wind farms when supply is greater than demand, such as in the middle of the night, and release it when demand outstrips supply, typically when demand peaks at the beginning and end of the working day.
Without Battery Energy Storage Systems energy costs will continue to rise, clean energy will go to waste and the UK will be unable to reach its Net Zero ambitions.
For example, the UK lost five days of clean electricity last year because there was nowhere for it to be stored. This lost electricity had to be regenerated from gas fired power plants resulting in 1.3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
